Airbus’ answer to the short-haul narrow body aircraft size, the A320 family is also mainly used on domestic routes. American Airlines is the largest operator of this family using them to get Americans around the country.

8. Boeing 787-10

The Dreamliner, Boeing’s new hyper efficient airliner for long haul flights, and the first aircraft to use an airframe made of primarily composite materials (carbon fiber reinforced polymer). All Nippon Airways from Japan is the largest operator of the newest family of Boeing’s aircraft. The Dreamliner currently holds the record for second longest flight in the world, from Perth to London.

7. Airbus A330-300

Airbus’s A330 is generally flown on medium haul flights whether long domestic flights or medium haul international flights. The largest operator of the A330s is Turkish airlines, which is also the largest carrier in the world in terms of destinations they service.

6. Ilyushin Il-96-400

The only Russian (and non Boeing/Airbus) aircraft featured on this list only has around 15 planes in service. The major operator is Rossiya which uses the aircraft in its government fleet.

Boeing’s workhorse in the the long range wide body aircraft arena is used by many airlines around the world. Emirates is the largest operator, using the aircraft to transport around the world.

3. Airbus A350-1000

Airbus’s competitor for the 787, a much newer platform and upgraded from its successor the A340. Qatar Airways has become the largest operator of the A350 using as part of its expansion to become a major airline of the world.

2. Boeing 747-8

The Jumbo Jet the largest aircraft for many years has had the 747-8 upgrade recently to increase capacity and fuel efficiency. British Airways is the largest operator of the fabled Jumbo Jets which seem to be losing popularity to the newer designs of the 787 and A350.

The Super Jumbo Jet, the biggest commercial passenger jet, many airports needed to be upgraded to be even able to service this monster aircraft.
