Top ten activities to do when visiting Perth

Perth, the biggest city on the western coast of Australia opposite to Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne. It is also the capital of Western Australia. Originally discovered by early explorers from the Netherlands and England, Perth is full of history. It has a large maritime background and currently has a very active port. While it is mainly and industrial port there is many fun things to do as a tourist.

10. Visit Elizabeth Quay

Elizabeth Quay is in the Perth city centre, and is a very nice place to walk around. There is some cafes and parks where you can relax and look out over Swan river. Best of all it’s free to visit can get some amazing shots. If you’re lucky you might get to see a black swan among the cormorants.

9. London Court

Just up the road from Elizabeth Quay, is an awesome little lane called London Court. It is a medieval styled lane lined with specialty shops. It is a great street just to walk down and window shop at all the stores.

8. The Pinnacles

Just outside Perth (2 hours :p), there is a pocket of desert along the coast. In this desert are these limestone rock formations that have formed due to erosion. It is absolutely fantastic to drive and walk through all the formations. You can get a great view of the whole desert if you climb to the top of some of the dunes.

7. Visit Fremantle

Fremantle is the port region of Perth, right at the mouth of the Swan River. It is a beautiful little town with many facades still intact from 1800s and 1900s. It is nice just to walk through Fremantle and get dinner along the coast (watching the sun set over the water :D).

6. The Roundhouse

While in Fremantle, make some time to go visit the Roundhouse just up the hill. Not just a great view of the ocean from up there but a well maintained ex-prison and cannons. If you are super lucky they might be doing the firing of the old cannons.

The state fauna of Western Australia is the black swan, so you have to try and find one. Elizabeth Quay and Bibra Lake are just two places where you might be able to snap a photo of one of these beautiful birds.

4. Visit Lesmurdie Falls

Just outside of Perth (only 20 minutes this time) is Lesmurdie Falls. Only a short drive and walk and you can be out in some amazing nature. The falls are fantastic to see if there has been rain. Additionally there are many other walks nearby if you are keen for some more hiking.

4. Climb the DNA Tower

Located in King’s Park is this nifty little tower you can climb up for a view of Perth. Named DNA Tower because it is built with the staircases in a double helix shape. Just like DNA!

3. King’s Park

While you are visiting the above DNA tower, make sure to stick King’s Park some more. It is the botanic garden of Perth with some lovely zones. It also contains a war memorial to all Australian soldiers. There is also many fantastic views of Perth and Swan River from a number of locations in the park

2. Wave Rock

Wave Rock is one of the most famous rock formations in Western Australia. It isn’t that close to Perth, but that is probably were most travelers come from. The rock literally looks like a wave coming out of the ground. Many photoshoots are done by tourists here with their surfboard. Surf’s up in the desert! ?

Catching the ferry to Rottnest Island is a great way to spend the day. There are plenty of quokkas to see and they are very tame. You can either hire a bike or get a hop on hop off bus tickets to see the whole island.
