Top ten 90s Australian children’s TV shows

The 1990s were a time of quality television for children in Australia with a large selection of shows for all ages. Most are actually developed and filmed in other countries but they were greatly popular in Australia.

10. Brum

A popular British show, however it was also very popular in Australia in the 1990s. Intended for younger kids, this show follows the adventures of a miniature Ford Model T. Brum escapes from his workshop everyday to go out into the world and help people out.

9. Magic Mountain

An Australian TV series aimed at young kids, which follows five animal friends. The animals were:

  • Dragon
  • Lion
  • Panda
  • Tortoise

The animals had fun around there homes and in the forest with the help of the dragon’s magic!

8. Budgie The Little Helicopter

Another British television show, actually created by Sarah Ferguson, Duchess of York. It follows the adventure of Budgie the Little Helicopter as he flies around helping people out. Very popular among younger kids during the 90s!

7. Daria

Created by MTV, Daria was super popular among Australia’s teenagers. Covering the the experiences of teenagers in America, it was very influential on young Australians.

6. Bananas In Pajamas

One of the most recognisable TV shows in Australia. B1 and B2 (the bananas in pajamas) spent their days having fun with their friends. Rat in the hat, Lulu, Morgan and Amy all enjoyed being helped out by the friendly bananas!

5. Arthur

Actually a Canadian cartoon, Arthur was extremely popular in the 90s for children. Following Arthur the Aardvark and his other anthropomorphic friends. They have adventures at school and on the weekends, it was a fun show to watch!

4. Round The Twist

Another authentic Australian TV show that was watched heavily in the 90s. It was about a family that lived in a lighthouse on the Australian coast. Every episode something supernatural would happen to the family. This was an exciting and interesting show for children to watch.

3. Blinky Bill

An Australian TV show about all the native Australian animals and their life in the bush. The main problem is a timber mill coming to area of the bush. Blinky Bill, as a troublemaker, is more than happy to cause issues!

2. Madeleine

Based on a novel about a class of girls in a French school, it was very popular in the 90s. It mainly followed the antics of Madeleine, in and out of school. She is a bit of a trouble maker but always means well and helps out where she can. It has a great art and animation style, making it a joy to watch.

1. Fireman Sam

Another British television show, Fireman show was super popular among young kids in the 90s. It followed Sam and his firemen buddies as they run the fire station. As well as putting out fires the firemen would help out the community with all sorts of problems.
